Last night. we strolled across the new Helix Bridge to take some night photos of Marina Bay and then had dinner at one of the restaurants fronting the bay.
The Marina Bay area of Singapore is a new development that began in the 1970s, when land reclamation was carried out at Marina Bay, forming what is today the Marina Centre and Marina South areas. In the reclamation process, the old area of Telok Ayer Basin was removed from the map, while the Singapore River’s mouth now flows into the bay instead of directly into the sea. A barrage now prevents salt water entering and the bay is now used for flood control and fresh water storage for Singapore’s drinking water. It is an enormous public area with open spaces and an entertainment area. Everything around this bay is new and grand.
We were still nearby at 9.30 when the nightly sound and light show began. This is a combination of sound, light and laser effects compete at one stage with a massive blanket of bubbles. It was a breathtaking show.
