Happy New Year to all our friends and readers.
It’s very hot here in Melbourne today – 37C (100F) and tomorrow is forecast to be 38C. The best thing to do on days like these is to be inside with the Aircon on, watch the cricket (2nd day of the 5th test match between Australia and India) and try to do something interesting and creative.
By now, we have all heard of AI and some of the remarkable things that it can do. I thought that I would see how well Artificial Intelligence could create some images. I’ve been a bush walker (hiker) all my life so I decided to work around a hiking theme as I tried out the abilities of ChatGPT which is now integrated into Apple’s latest software.
To create an image, you enter a prompt into the App describing what you want it to produce. I started with:
“Make in image of a hiker in a city park”
I continued with the thought of creating scenes that I might have experienced in my bushwalking days.
“A hiker walking on a railway track through the mountains”
I found that I achieved better results in terms of local scenery by including the word ‘Australia’ in the prompt and this was the result:
Here’s what happened when I asked Chat GPT to create an image of a hiker walking into a camp site in Australia.
I followed this up with a request to create an image of a hiker near a waterfall in an Australian rainforest.
A few others – A hiker walking along a wide ocean beach at sunset.
A hiker walking across a river, in Australia, using a pole for support.
A hiker in an alpine region looking at a glacier.
This one is not so realistic – a hiker in the Australian outback with a mob of kangaroos on a plain in the distance.
Hikers walking through the Australian outback
Lastly, a hiker on a mountain top looking over a valley.
I think that these images have varying degrees of realism although I can picture myself in all of them. Sadly, my body doesn’t let me do activities like strenuous hiking anymore. These days, we travel by staying in hotels and just see views like these out the window.

Interesting. We’re eating for the gates to open at the MCG. 😉
