Another Kiva Milestone

Last week, I contributed our 200th loan to Kiva. I am very keen on helping people in under-developed countries to improve their life and perceive that Kiva is a very worthwhile organisation to support. My small contribution of $25 was combined with that of sixteen others in places that range from Norway to China. Together, we raised a total loan of $600. I’ll track progress over the period of the loan and then when it is paid back, I will lend the money someone else.

Here are the details of Chiv Sokheng, to whom we made this loan.

Sokheng is 24 years old and a resident of the Pursat Province in Cambodia. She has two children, both of whom are under her care. She is married to Pech, 26, who is a motor-taxi driver. Sokheng is a pig raiser which enables her to earn good profits. She always sells to the slaughter every four months when they are big enough to be sold. Sokheng is a responsible mother and neighbor, and she wants to increase her income through her business. Sokheng is applying for a loan to buy more piglets for her pigpen.

It is so large that it takes up the whole ground floor of the gallery and is presented in two parts. Yayoi Kusama is […]

Coffee Encounters

One of my enduring memories of my service in Vietnam is that of being in a convoy way out in the boondocks resupplying a forward operation. There in the middle of nowhere, and in a potentially dangerous location, was an Australian Salvation Army Officer and his Landrover ready to serve us a cup of hot […]

Over the Haast Pass to NZ’s West Coast

We had about 275 kilometres to travel today but we were not rushed and today’s drive felt very comfortable and relaxed. Perhaps it was the coffee in Wanaka that we waited 20 minutes to get. The young barista in the cafe was working hard and she had our coffees up as fast as she could […]
